What is ADHD?

ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a condition that affects a child’s ability to concentrate and stay focused and on task, especially throughout the day at school. This disorder affects some 11% of children between ages 4-17 in the United States. That’s roughly 6.4 million children.

What types of ADHD exist?

There are three types of ADHD, differentiated by their specific symptoms. They are:

  • Hyperactive/Impulsive. Children with this disorder have difficulty with sitting still and working with their classmates.
  • Inattentive. Those with this disorder have difficulty focusing. They may appear to be listening when they are not.
  • Combination. These children have both symptoms of hyperactive and inattentive ADHD.

Lots of children can have difficulty staying still and focused at times. However, for children who have ADHD, life at home and school becomes difficult and stressful. Their symptoms cause disruption and distress for their loved ones. It also leads to low self-esteem. Dr. Nauman is highly experienced in assessing ADHD in children and providing or referring patients for appropriate treatment, depending on the severity and specifics of their disorder.

How prevalent is depression among children and adolescents?

Depression affects 2% of children and 5- 8% of adolescents in this country, although it often goes undiagnosed. Dr. Nauman can help in providing accurate diagnoses of depression in children and adolescents and alleviating symptoms of this disease, which often runs in families.
